Celebrating 7 Years, These Are 7 “Gifts” from Kilang Pertamina Internasional for the Nation’s Energy Security

Jakarta, 14 November 2024 - Exactly 7 years old, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) continues to perform optimally as the parent company of Pertamina's processing and petrochemicals (13/11). KPI Corporate Secretary, Hermansyah Y Nasroen highlighted seven "gifts" or KPI's main contributions to Indonesia as a form of the company's commitment to overseeing the country's energy security.

From a sustainability aspect, cumulatively from 2020 to 2024, KPI has successfully recorded 3.8 million tons of carbon emission reduction. In fact, the parent company of Pertamina's refineries and petrochemicals is one of the main contributors to decarbonization in Pertamina's environment in welcoming the 2030 Energy Mix target and the 2060 Net Zero Emission initiated by the Indonesian government.

"KPI's decarbonization strategy combines aspects of technology and Nature Based Solutions (NBS) or environmental-based emission reductions such as planting Mangroves," added Hermansyah.

The second "gift" is KPI's major contribution through multiplier effects created through the National Strategic Project (PSN). The Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) project at the Balikpapan refinery not only increases processing capacity to 360,000 barrels per day but also has a positive impact on the socio-economy of the surrounding community.

"TKDN absorption has reached 33.9%. In addition, based on the Investment Activity Report (LKPM) and Balikpapan City Investment Realization Data in 2023, PT Kilang Pertamina Balikpapan has the largest investment realization value of more than IDR 14.8 trillion, making it the largest realization value in Balikpapan City. In total, this project absorbs thousands of workers, especially during the peak of construction reaching 26,000 workers," explained Hermansyah.

The next contribution is the green fuel roadmap in overseeing the energy transition era through the development of the Green Refinery. "One of them is at the Cilacap Refinery which is currently entering the 2nd phase of development study. In phase 1, the Cilacap Refinery already has a green refinery with a green fuel capacity of 3000 barrels. Through this refinery, Pertamina Renewable Diesel products and Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel products can be produced. In phase 2, a new green refinery unit will be built with a green fuel processing capacity of 6000 barrels," explained Hermansyah.

The next gift from KPI is the immediate production of bioavtur that meets the ISCC (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) certification requirements. This certification proves that international requirements regarding the sustainability of the product have been met. To obtain this certificate, Used Cooking Oil (UCO) is used as the raw material. Currently, KPI through the Cilacap Refinery has been able to produce bioavtur with palm kernel as the raw material component.

Meanwhile, from the aspect of Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL), in 2024 KPI recorded the distribution of aid of 16.5 billion rupiah. "Of course, the principle of our TJSL program does not only prioritize numbers, but also creates independence for the beneficiaries. Our TJSL programs have received national recognition such as PROPER and global recognition such as the SDGs Award," said Hermansyah.

In line with TJSL, Employee Volunteerism and worker social actions continue to be improved to celebrate the anniversary from year to year. "One of our Employee Volunteerism movements, the "Green Journey Challenge", successfully raised 178 million rupiah and will be distributed to the CarbonEthics Indonesia Foundation, and the funds will be used to plant 2,000 Mangrove trees in Indramayu. In addition, there are many other charity events initiated by workers in the series of the 7th anniversary," explained Hermansyah.

No less important is KPI's commitment to maintaining safe performance for up to 614,086,116 hours in October 2024. "The conduciveness of the refinery based on HSSE aspects is absolutely needed to ensure the company's reliability in processing and producing quality products," concluded Hermansyah.

Boosting Refinery Performance

In addition to socio-economic contributions to the surrounding area, KPI continues to strengthen refinery performance, in line with KPI's strategic role in maintaining the resilience of the national oil and gas and petrochemical industry.

One of the main indicators is the total product yield where at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2024, KPI succeeded in supporting the country's energy resilience by maximizing the production of 251.5 million barrels of BBM, Non-BBM and other products. "The quality of the products produced is always improved to Euro V standards and low sulfur," explained Hermansyah.

Refining Resilience

In its 7th year of establishment, KPI raised the theme 'Refining Resilience' which reflects KPI's capability to process energy resources in order to create refinery profitability amidst the challenges of the existing energy trilemma.

The energy trilemma is a challenge faced in energy management, which includes three main issues: Energy Security, Energy Equity/Affordability, and Sustainability.

KPI will continue to maintain the company's commitment to grow into a profit-oriented company by running a sustainable and environmentally conscious business, Hermansyah concluded.

KPI is a subsidiary of Pertamina that runs its main business of oil and petrochemical processing in accordance with the ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) principles. KPI has also registered with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and is committed to the Ten Universal Principles or Ten Principles of UNGC in its operational strategy as part of the implementation of ESG aspects. KPI will continue to run its business professionally to realize its vision of becoming a world-class Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Company that is environmentally conscious, socially responsible and has good corporate governance.
